When no one turned up in the soldiers’ camp by morning, the Lions put the camp to the torch as a message should any of their fellows return here looking for shelter. They then began the long march back towards Carenhold.
Yet for a third time the Lions encountered opposition on the road as a group of brigands stalked them through the woods, thinking the Lions an easier mark. This time Adara and Safira spotted the enemy earlier and the Lions had time to prepare. With Thalion too wounded to fight, Garrik concentrated on rallying Safira and Waltom to prevent anyone from breaking through their line. Aldric raised a cry of “archer!” as he pulled Adara to a nearby outcropping for cover while Garrik ordered the others to stay nearby. The radiant aura of his breastplate encompassed the trio, granting them divine protection from the archer as they turned their attention to the remaining brigands.
The Radiant Chest-Plate is quite nice. The wearer an any model within 1” can only be hit by a ranged attack of a natural six. Even better than being in cover, since an opponent’s combat score doesn’t matter.
The Lions thin the brigands’ ranks on the way in, injuring some and forcing others to choose flight over valor. Adara is eager to show off what she’s learned with the sword but Aldric keeps her in place as they force the brigands to swing around the outcropping at them, where the duo are able to cut them down one by one. As they finish the last one off Aldric darts across the battlefield to where his commander held his defensive line, fighting purely defensively to keep the enemy back while Safira and Waltom shot any who got too close.
As Aldric neared Garrik made his move, binding the remaining bandits in place just outside of sword’s reach from his companions. They cursed the priest as his companions fired at point blank range, downing two, before Aldric swooped in to finish off their leader. When the Lions turned to where the archer was firing from cover, they saw the final brigand already fleeing for his life.
